This adventure can be used to provide an introduction to the game for new players or an introduction to Chult for experienced players. They get to meet some of the power brokers in the city and get to explore the various sections of the city in a search to gather together the pieces of the MacGuffin. The various adventures reward multiple approaches rather than just hitting the same note over and over.

The dinosaur race has usually proven to be the most popular section of the adventure for obvious reasons.

This is a good intro adventure, especially for new players. The individual mini-adventures allow you to pace the game the way that works best for your group. The group can approach this however they want, but the structure rewards them for taking various approaches rather than just murderhobo.

There are some fun story awards that the characters can earn as well.

Unfortunately, this starts off as a simple fetch quest with the characters going to get information to be used later in another adventure. Then the opening encounter felt like padding added to reach the desired XP total or run time. It had no purpose being in this adventure since it neither advanced the story or depleted resources since the characters get a long rest after this encounter.

The second and third parts provide some great opportunities for roleplay as both the hags and the Ramshackle Court feature some interesting NPCs.

The final fight was a challenging one, especially if you modify the spell list of the archmage. Psychic Scream + Hellfire Orb make for a great opener to the fight. Maze the Paladin or the strongest looking melee striker. Pre-cast Mage Armor, Mirror Image, Fire Shield and Crown of Stars for the archmage, and use your reactions to Counterspell instead of using Shield.

It starts off with a fun hook, find the daughter who has been missing for 100 years. The initial investigation was good, but it did seem a bit like a quest chain where each NPC hands the PCs off to the next NPC.

After that part, the plot gets a bit tenuous.

There are also some issues with the structure of the encounters once the PCs get to the point where they need to explore the wreck. If the group can't cast water breathing the adventure fails. At least have some sort of work around for parties that don’t happen to have this ability available to them. This happened one of the times that I ran this, so I had the Merchant Princes sell them potions of water breathing to allow the adventure to continue.

Why are merfolk warlocks pact of the fiend? This makes no sense thematically and also results in many of their abilities and spells being ineffective because they are fire based.

Why doesn’t Aremag have legendary actions? I can’t think of a single reason that there shouldn’t be a sidebar detailing additional abilities that Aremag has added to his stat block.

There are some good aspects to this adventure, but there are some parts that make no sense whatsoever.

The two sages that the party is escorting and protecting are not just entertaining, but can be used as a DM tool when the party gets stuck on some of the puzzles.

I much appreciated the time taken to develop the story of the human and Loxo tribes, it really helped the narrative of the story. I thought Crannaston was a well thought out character.

1 on 1 combats are an interesting change of pace. The entire party getting stuck in a set of 1 on 1 combats and unable to help others even when they finish their fight can be a problem. Combat oriented characters blast their opponent with ease, but then can do nothing but watch support characters struggle to get through. The instructions for this encounter could use some editing to make them a bit more clear, there is some ambiguity.

Psychic Scream with a DC 20 save is a great opener. However, the DM should be careful using this because it's stun effect doesn't go away until a character passes the save. That means that not only is it possible to lock players out of the entire final fight (which isn't that much fun for them), if a character has a negative int score, they can never save.

A simple, straight forward exploration adventure that doesn’t actually have much exploration since they are able to find the location with little effort. The fight at the end can be tough depending on the party make up.

There is one entertaining NPC that the DM can have some fun with. I enjoyed playing Feetor when I ran this.

I wanted to like this one, the framework is there to have a good adventure. It just didn’t come together in a way that was fun. I like the fact that there are few combats and lots of puzzles and traps. However, half the puzzles were badly written and confusing, which was made worse by the poor maps.

The exploration of the grounds and building while looking for clues to get in was pretty well set up. The ambush spiced up this section as well. The issue that I had is with the invisible chest that contains most of the reward for this adventure.

The final fight was fun, but turned pretty quickly. This is a situation where action economy is going to turn towards the players very quickly. Giving the Staff to K'Nap was an odd choice. He's so squishy and his to-hit modifiers are so low that it's not really plausible for him to try to stun a PC with it (as his tactics direct). The best thing to have him do is just use the powers of the staff to throw some lightning around.

Great dungeon crawl, even though it's linear. The author did a good job of challenging Tier 3 players, not by adding monsters, but by using environmental effects. Make sure the players pay attention to what SEER or Hsing says at the beginning. This will save them some pain once inside.

Most of this dungeon is puzzle- and trap-laden, although there are also clues to some of the traps hidden on some of the floors. Of course, there are also monsters to fight and some of the combats can be very challenging.

The best part of the mod was the variety of encounters - there was something that tapped on each of the gameplay pillars, and it gives plenty of room for repeat play without feeling stale. A few rooms could have used better reasons for the characters to interact such as the pool room, but mostly good.

That said, the final battle was a good one that could actually threaten tier 4 parties (Radiant Meteor Swarm). It does take some serious preparation as there are so many spell effects on the NPCs that can become important in the later stages of the fight. It is also fairly likely that the PCs will face Dendar since they will likely have failures in the maze and each one advances the round count by one in the final fight.

The reward, however is very underwhelming. Considering what was at stake and what it took to get there, it feels like more of a letdown than it should have been.

This is not a two-hour adventure particularly if there are characters that belong to one of the factions that add extra encounters.

The time line is strange here because there is a piece of the soulmonger in this adventure, but it takes place during the death curse.

The final encounter can be very challenging particularly if Ullal uses the staff. One Wall of Thorns down the hallway will really set things up.

This adventure is the best of the tier 1 trilogy. It definitely requires a good amount of prep work to keep all of the moving parts straight.

The puzzle was fun, but make sure that you keep the encounter moving. The waves of zombies can wear down smaller or lower level groups if the group concentrates on them rather than the puzzle.

The last fight was challenging and can be deadly depending on the makeup of the group. I didn’t have Wadumu turn on the party since there was no way that I could have him turn into a bad guy.

I liked that this was a good way to get the players introduced into Port Nyanzaru/Chult. The dinosaur race was a lot of fun and the race was more detailed and involved over the DDAL07-01 race. I liked that the race has various options for completing the various stages.

A quick note on the betting before the race, the odds listed have been reversed, so that what would be listed as bet 1, receive 7 is listed as 1:7 instead of 7:1.

A very enjoyable adventure with a nice mix of roleplay opportunities and combat encounters. There are some interesting NPCs that can be fun for the DM to play in Thornacious and Blassios. Having solid NPCs always makes the DM’s job more enjoyable.

One drawback is that with a 2 hour listed time there really isn’t enough time for the characters to get to know the town well enough to be motivated by its plight while also having time to solve the problem. This may end up running long for that reason.

Giant Diplomacy is a fun adventure to both run and play as long as you are willing to improvise. The role-play encounters can be a lot of fun if you really play up the NPCs. However, you should be prepared for this to go well over the listed 2 hours.
