GM's Maps #42: Shopping Arcade

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The precursor to malls, the first shopping arcades appeared in Europe in the late 18th century and were developed as a response to the muddy, cramped, streets filled with dangerous horse-drawn traffic. The arcade was a glass covered pedestrian-only shopping alley lined with shops and kiosks. The glass ceilings of the main concourse allowed light into the building and kept the inclement weather at bay.

Shopping arcades can still be found in many cities around the world today, even in the USA where larger malls have become the norm, several historical arcades survive and are still used today.

The Arcade can house most forms of retail business and even have some office spaces. The map presented here includes one cafe or tea shop and one restaurant, the other retail units might include any type of shop or retail endeavour the GM wishes. Confectioner, tobacconists, tailors, stationary shops are just a few ideas of the type of shops often found in such arcades.

The shopping arcade can be used in a wide range of scenarios for any genre. In superhero games, it might provide an interesting backdrop for a showdown between the villains and the heroes. In a Gothic horror campaign the arcade may be haunted, or perhaps one of the shopkeepers has a lead that the party need to look into. Perhaps one of the units belongs to an antiquarian who has a magical artefact in their possession.

The arcade could also be the target of a robbery with the PCs either playing the thieves or the authorities trying to investigate (or prevent) the theft. Similarly, in mystery scenarios perhaps the PCs an investigating a murder or other crime which occurred in the shopping arcade.

It's a good map, I'm not a big fan of the multi floor shops since they're difficult to map into roll20 but they're usable in this case. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
